Animal Facility

The Animal Facility of Department of Pharmacology was renovated in 2016 with the support of Onassis Foundation. The new infrastructure operates according to updated national and european requirements. The facility can host up to 1500 small rodents in specific pathogen free (SPF) conditions. In the facility, there is an experimental operating room and specialized equipment for research in the fields of cardiovascular pharmacology, inflammation, cancer and behavioral sciences.

The infrastructure includes:

  • Central Air Cleaning and Climate Control System

  • Specialized equipment for cleaning and sterilizing

  • Individual Ventilated Cages for mice

  • Anaesthesia and Operation Room

    Laboratory "S. Papadimitriou-D. Varonos"

    The collaboration between the Department of Pharmacology and the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center has resulted in the development of a Research Unit for the study of Cardiovascular Pharmacology which was supported by Onassis Foundation. To honour this collaboration in 2008, one of the laboratories was named Laboratory «S. Papadimitriou – D. Varonos». This laboratory hosts the perfusion apparatus for isolated rat hearts (Langendorff).

    Cell Culture Laboratory

    The Cell Culture Laboratory was renovated in 2016 with the support of Onassis Foundation.
    The cell culture lab has the necessary equipment to study cell lines, myoblasts, cardiomyocytes, inoblasts and cancer cells and to investigate in depth molecular mechanisms. Contractility and calcium transients at the level of cardiomyocytes is studied in an ΙΟΝ-OPTIX system. Part of the research equipment was a generous offer of Bodosakis Foundation.

    Laboratory Mina and Pia Zobanaki

    Mina and Pia Zobanaki laboratory was founded in Department of Pharmacology in 2008 after the generous offer of Mr. Minoas Zobanakis and his sons Andreas and Costas. This Unit has contributed to further develop and support research by the addition of important infrastructure. An automated analytical system Luminex 200IS and an ELISA reader Tecan Genios allows to perform accurate measurements of cytokines, chemokines, hormones, inflammatory and growth factors in biological fluids and tissues from patients and animals.
